Featured Character: Brittney Merrill

By Care

ReVolutionary Theory is the magazine that’s all about you – whether you’re a chatter, a player, or even a character! For this issue, Care delves into time itself to meet Brittney of the Travelers.

Can you believe it’s been a few months already? I can’t, either, but we know what time it is: Character Interview Time! That’s right, it’s the time where I sit down with one of the many characters and their typist and have a little Q&A Session with them.

This time around we are hitting up Calliope, owner of The Travelers, a room based on a show that is on Netflix. Now, I’ll be honest – I don’t know anything about this show, or this roleplay, other than what I have read on their entrance page and their application, so this is going to be interesting!

Hi, Calliope, and thank you for taking time out of your day to do this with me.

First off, could you explain what the Travelers is about, so that people who don’t already know can learn a little about this room before we get to the character part of the interview?

The Travelers is based off the Netflix / Showtime show of the same name. Centuries in the future, humanity is nearing extinction, as is most life. In a last effort to save themselves, scientists have discovered a way to send special operatives back in time to prevent the disasters that will mark the collapse of society. These operatives are known as ‘Travelers’ and take over the body of a 21st Century individual via a transfer of consciousness. They become the person they inhabit and use their life as a cover for the covert operation. The Travelers are overseen by an invisible body simply known as the Director. The Director sends missions and messages to the Travelers to complete in their efforts to change the future.

Interesting. Can you tell us a little about how you came up with the character we’re about to meet?

Brit was initially written up as a starter character, someone to help new players get comfortable and involved in the storyline. She’s a Team Leader for one of the Traveler Teams and her storylines are meant to be newbie friendly. Of course, once she got into play a bit, she took on a life of her own, but she’s still flexible in that aspect of pulling others in.

With that, let’s switch gears, and if Brit is in your head, let’s pull her out!

Sounds good!

Hi. Could you please tell us your name and a little about yourself?

Traveler 04287. Team Leader for Koppa Sigma. Undercover as college student Brittney Merrill. Sociology major, work part time as a waitress in a diner, live in an apartment with my sister. Really nothing to see here, and that’s for the best.

Traveler 04287 – that’s your name? You didn’t have a name before you started on the Traveler’s Team? Nothing to share?

That’s the only name that matters. My past ended the day I entered the program, as it does for all Travelers. The only identity I have is as Brittney.

Can you share with us about Brittney, then? How old is she? What’s she like? Anything like that?

Brittney is twenty-three years old. It’s complicated – according to history, she died in a violent mugging on July 5, 2017. Instead, I came across in the final moments of her life. From all accounts, she was sweet and kind, popular at school, and smart. Decent enough grades. Not terribly athletic, but I can work on that. I’m here now, but I don’t hold any of her memories – I still have my own. I guess you could say she truly did die that day.

You just took over her life with no regards to her family? How do you feel about that? Living with people who don’t get to mourn their dead loved one?

To her family, she’s still very much alive – perhaps a little changed, but traumatic events can have that sort of impact, you know. They don’t know she’s gone.

You live her life as if nothing happened – what exactly is a day like for you, then?

It depends on if I have a Mission or not. Without a Mission, it’s simply maintaining the lifestyle that Brittney had beforehand. It means attending class, going to work, spending time with her sister as necessary – but if not, the Mission comes first.

What kind of Missions have you been on?

Not many – my team has been delayed in their arrival. Investigating a future host, welcoming a new Traveler, and getting close to the potential future leader of the Russian Resistance, with orders to remove him from the picture.

Do you have contact with others from the time you came from?

That knew me then? I shouldn’t. That’s not how the program is designed, but certain people have influence. My newest Team Member is an old mentor, a friend of the family.

How do you tell who is another Traveler? Is there something that you just know, or what?

The whole point is that you can’t tell. Otherwise, it would be too easy for others to discover us. We can communicate through the Dark Web, or the Director can send messengers to connect us sometimes. The only other Travelers I am aware of are those within my Team. I could slam into one on the street and never know it.

Well, that explains a little, but how do you get your Missions? Is it on the Dark Web? Or does this Director contact you somehow?

The Director contacts us using messengers. Children, mostly. Their minds are still growing and malleable enough to accept a transmission without damage and be able to bounce back. In a distress situation, though, the Director can override an adult – it just isn’t pretty.

Interesting. Well, I think I’ve taken up enough of your time. I want to thank you for taking the time to speak with us.

Featured character: opiate

By Care

ReVolutionary Theory is the magazine that’s all about you – whether you’re a chatter, a player, or even a character! For this issue, Care braves the savage world of Gor to meet with the addictive opiate.

Hello, and welcome to this quarter’s character interview. This time around, we are sitting down with Covet{Dark}, who plays in the room Harfax. We get to learn a little about not just the character, who is a slave to a Metalworker in the town of Harfax, but Covet as well.

For those of you that may not know exactly what Gor is, Gor is a realm based on a series of books by a man named John Norman. I will tell you, don’t try to read the books if you’re a stickler for style, as the writing often leaves much to be desired. The series started in the 1970s and follows a man named Tarl Cabot through his journey on a strange alternative planet. The planet is run by men, who believe women are the lesser of the sexes. Many women in this world are slaves, and those that are have no rights and may own nothing, not even their own name. To me personally, Gor is one of those realms where it often calls to you, but sometimes just doesn’t work.

Thank you for doing this interview with me. Let’s start with how you, the person behind the character, got started im Gor?

C o v e t {Dark}: Well, Harfax isn’t my first venture into the Gorean world. I played a Physician in a wagon camp years ago, and bat one point, another slave, too. This time, I spoke with Dark and asked him to teach me as if from the beginning. I’ve got basic knowledge, but not a lot of the finer details.

How do you personally like Gor?

C o v e t {Dark}: It’s a trip. It’s very outside my box of comfort. I still have moments where I think, “what the fuck am I even supposed to do?”, so I ask. I really do enjoy it though. I think the submissive part of my personality seems pretty content there.

Do you believe that being submissive helps you in becoming your Gorean slave character?

C o v e t {Dark}: Yes, I do. I can’t imagine that as a more dominant person, I would be able to understand and put myself in my character’s place – the situations that she’s had to deal with, and the consequences for the actions that she takes.

How did you come up with the character? Was there a brainstorming session with your roleplay partner?

C o v e t {Dark}: My character started out with no name. By that I mean her name was nothing. I wanted to start from the very beginning, so we plotted a bit and decided she would have come to the world of Gor not long before. She was originally a barbarian. She didn’t know how to speak the language on Gor at all. It was frustrating and hilarious at the same time.

That sounds like a fun character to start with. I have played both Free Woman and a slave in Gor, and I know it’s a hard transition to work with.

So now that we have that out of the way, if you don’t mind, we would like to meet your Gorean character. We will start with what is your name, and where did you come from?

C o v e t {Dark}: My name is opiate. I am not from here, but I really couldn’t tell you much of where I am from. I was born a slave and it’s all I’ve ever remembered. I don’t remember my family.

opiate, such a pretty name. Tell us, opiate, who is your owner, and maybe a little about yourself?

C o v e t {Dark}: My owner is Rhage of Harfax. I live in a villa with my Master. I don’t leave without him. I used to go to the forge with him, but I was attacked there, so unless he can keep his eyes on me all the time, he won’t take me out.

So you have no freedom at all, within your ownership? Doesn’t that get a bit difficult?

C o v e t {Dark}: Outside the villa, no. I can do whatever I want inside the villa, though. A slave belonging to one of the guards has been teaching me how to dance so I can surprise my Master with it. I don’t think it’s difficult at all. I wouldn’t feel safe out by myself anyway.

So you’re telling me that you like being locked up in the Villa? You have no desire to go outside at all, no curiosity of what might be out there?

C o v e t {Dark}: If I want to go out, my Master will take me. I just have to ask him, but generally, I’m pretty content. I’ve seen a lot of the city. We go to the market pretty regularly. My Master will sometimes give me pretty silks if I behave.

Ok, that makes a little sense. Tell us about being owned – do you think you would ever want to be a Free Woman?

C o v e t {Dark}: I would never want to be Free. I love my Master. He takes care of me and I make sure he is happy. He knows what’s best for me and I don’t question him on that at all.

And what does a slave like you do for fun around a villa? Anything special?

C o v e t {Dark}: Aside from dancing, I’ve been learning how to cook more. There are gardens as well. I can go out there during the day when my Master is gone. The sun always feels so good against my skin.

Have you had any adventures? Anything exciting happen to you?

C o v e t {Dark}: Last week, my Master took me to the markets where there was a celebration going on. We got to watch the dancing girls. There was a whole big show. I had a lot of fun watching that. Other than that, we haven’t gotten to travel much, but probably soon.

You seem very content and happy in your life as a slave, but if you had one thing you would change, what would it be?

C o v e t {Dark}: I’m not really sure. I please my Master, so I pretty much get whatever I want from him because I earn it. Of course, I wish that maybe he didn’t have to work so I wouldn’t have to miss him when he was gone, but he is very proud of the work he does, so I wouldn’t want to take that from him, either.

I have to say thank you, opiate, for taking a few moments with us. I hope you have a happy life with your Owner.

C o v e t {Dark}: Thank you, Miss. I will.

As a thank you to Covet for taking the time out of her night to do this interview, I’ve created something special for her: https://roleplayevolution.com/galleries/carebear/albums/userpics/10001/opiate01-caremay17.jpg (NSFW)

Featured Character: Claude Tredeau

By Care

ReVolutionary Theory is the magazine that’s all about you – whether you’re a chatter, a player, or even a character! For this issue, Care steps into the office of vampire master Claude Tredeau.

This quarter we’re going down to the supernatural section of the whochat. I’m going to be stepping into the mind of one of the oldest characters that a player has with Claude Tredeau, a vampire within the world created by Laurell K. Hamilton.

Let’s start with the mind behind the character: Yoko!

Hey! Welcome to my little corner of the world, Yoko. To begin, why don’t you tell me a little bit about yourself – How did you start roleplaying?

Yoko: That’s a story and a half! I started roleplaying way back in high school. I did Vampire: The Masquerade with a LARP troupe, but as I got older, it started to become harder to actually go out and role-play. I hopped on MSN chat one night (yes, MSN used to have chat rooms!) and found an online V:tM room. I dropped in there, and before I knew it, I was playing there every night and involved in some big storylines. I ended up meeting some new people, one of whom became my current best friend and roommate. We started a Giovanni room on MSN that became very popular, but as MSN started shutting down its chat rooms we transitioned to HTML role-play, and the rest is kind of history.

That’s very cool and interesting. So, where do you play now on Roleplay Evolution?

Yoko: Most of mine are pretty old, but I did just recently make a character named Finn for Kansas City Sins, and since Fractured Reflections is so new, my two characters there are brand new as well. Finn is a hyena lycan and Valentina and Fiona are both members of the Arcanus family.

How old is Claude? And where did the concept for him come from?

Yoko: He was created – gosh, in 2003 I believe, so he’s been around about fourteen years. What’s funny about him being my main character is that he was created as a total joke. He was my first male character. I had been up late listening to music, and that sleep-deprived slap-happiness had set in. Guru and I were joking about making a Kid Rock vampire, and so I did. He started out just a regular average vamp in the city, but somehow got more and more popular. As I began to enjoy playing him more and more, I started to develop him more by working on an actual serious backstory for him. After a few years, he went from mid-level vamp to working for the Master of the City, to serving as her second, to eventually becoming Master of the City himself.

We all love characters that kind of just take on a life of their own. Would you say that Claude has done that for you?

Yoko: Oh, absolutely. I’ve even retired him more than once, but he just keeps on finding his way back and gaining new momentum and life.

Ok, so if you are ready and he is, the next part is for him.

Yoko: Sure!

Hello, Claude. I have to say thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to talk with us. So, tell me, what are you?

Claude: What am I? Sounds like a simple question, but it’s actually rather complex. The simple answer? I’m a Master Vampire, of course. A more complete answer? I’m a business owner, I’m a father, I’m a care giver, and a mediator over many moving pieces within my city. I’m many things all combined together to make me – me. I’d like to think I’m the only me in existance.

How did you become a father? Most of us that know vampires have heard that they can’t have children.

Claude: Well, I have four children all together and that would be four very complicated stories. But I will say this – be careful when you’re with those that control elements and temperatures, or even more so, magic. That’s all I’m going to say on that.

Well, maybe one day, we’ll get you to share the story. How do you handle business? Are you one of the vampires that can go out in the daylight?

Claude: You just want all my secrets, don’t you?. To an extent, yes, I can go out in the daylight. I can’t spend the day at the beach or work on my tan, but I can handle daylight for certain periods of time. Being able to be awake during the day if I need to is rather helpful when it comes to getting a lot done in a certain amount of time. I’m not bound to only being productive after it gets dark.

Of course we want your secrets – what reporter wouldn’t? Can you tell us, is there a difference between you and other vampires?

Claude: A difference? I would say absolutely there’s a difference. I think that once we gain strength – to the point that we’re not just one of the average everyday vampires bound to someone else’s court, but are part of our own, or even more so the master of our own court – it makes you stand out from the others. For example, I’m the master of the city. I’m the only one in the city – that makes me different. I have a specific animal to call, I come from a specific bloodline, I have a specific set of abilities. I’m the only one with that exact combination of features. So I would say, yes, there is absolutely a difference between myself and the others.

Care to share what a day/evening is like with you?

Claude: Now, that’s an interesting question. It can all depend on the day or evening. I have four children, one of which is only five years old, and two significant others, I’m Master of Kansas City and I own the most popular club there. So, there are a million combinations of what my days and evenings could look like. I do try to rise as early as possible, without putting myself in jeopardy, in order to spend time with my children, especially my youngest. Sometimes that means playing in the garden or at the playground. She loves to swim and we have a rather large indoor pool at the estate. She loves all the things that most five year old girls love. Until she’s in bed, I try to have my focus on her, just being her father. As I said, I currently have two significant others, so I do try to spend time with them as well. I take care of any court business that might need to be handled, and if there’s time left in my evening, I enjoy getting to spend time relaxing at Sins of the Flesh, the club I mentioned before. That’s a pretty typical day or evening – when I get the luxury of a typical day or evening.

Two significant others? How do you handle that? I mean are they both women or men? Yes, Claude, we are asking if you are a player?

Claude: A player? Moi? You flatter me. I don’t know if player is the word I would use, but I handle it pretty easily, actually. They both live in the estate with me. They know each other, and while I wouldn’t go so far as to say that they’re the best of friends, they’re at the very least civil and friendly with each other. They’re both equally important to me. They understand that monogamy is not something that fits my lifestyle and neither one of them expects it from me. I don’t hide things from them, and I don’t expect anything from them that I myself am not willing to give. It works out rather well for all three of us.

Has there been a time where you weren’t what seems to be on top of the world?

Claude: Of course. I’ve had to work very hard to achieve what I have now, building this life for myself. In my human life, I was nothing special – just an everyday insignificant man, and that really didn’t change upon starting my life as a vampire. I was still a nobody, insignificant. We all are in the beginning. It hasn’t been a smooth rise to where I am now, either. I have suffered great loss, lost more than a few people who were deeply important to me. Even my children have suffered. It’s not easy being a good father when you don’t rise until their bedtime and die for the day before they wake up. The last thirty or so years of my life have completely changed who and what I am.

How did it change your life? I mean, you’re a vampire. You rise and die and then drink blood, right? That’s all there is to it?

Claude: That’s like saying a person wakes up, eats a sandwich, and goes to bed, and that’s all there is to them. There is so much more. On top of the members of my family and the others under my care and protection, like my leopards, I’m responsible for every vampire in my city. As I grow in power it constantly changes me. The people who have come in and out of my life have changed me. And more than anything, my children have changed me in so many ways. They make me see the world differently, They’ve made me see myself differently. I’ve had flaws in myself pointed out that I’ve had to work on and change to be a better father and a better Master. It’s a very common strategy to rule by fear, and yes, sometimes, it’s necessary, but it’s not the only way. There can be positive change if you work hard enough at it.

You mentioned ruling by fear. How do you rule your own piece of the world?

Claude: Through respect, both given and earned, and through the message of co-existance. Having my children, and each of them being so very different from the others, has shown me that we don’t need to exist in these separate communities, where everyone take cares of themselves and nobody else. We can work together. Vampires, lycans, humans with abilities, humans with no abilities at all. I have seen so many wars break out between groups simply because nobody wanted to reach out to each other or have each other’s backs. Or even more so, because of fear; because everyone fears in some way what they don’t know and understand. And I am very proud of the fact that there has not been a single major war within my city while I’ve been Master of the City. Even Humans First is an almost insignificant speck in the city, and that’s not a small task, trust me.

Humans First – what exactly is that?

Claude: Simply put, Humans First is a group that believes that humans are the only ones that should exist. They hate everything non-human – Vampires, lycans, fae, even other humans with non-human abilities. But they don’t just hold rallies and picket – they take people, torture them, commit murder. They perform all sorts of horrible acts of violence in the hopes of a humans only world.

Interesting. Well, I have to say thank you again for taking time out of your busy day for this. Is there anything you would like to say to the readers?

Claude: I thank you for your time as well. Hopefully, I’ve helped paint the picture that not everybody is exactly what they seem.

Featured Character: Keifer Jeffries

By Care

ReVolutionary Theory is the magazine that’s all about you – whether you’re a chatter, a player, or even a character! For this issue, Care examines the circuitry of Keifer Jeffries.

It’s time again for the quarterly periodical, and that means a new character interview. This time, we are sitting down with Kara and her character, Keifer Jefferies. Kara and Keifer can be found in the Creative Dimensions section of the whochat, in the room The Aftermath: New Vegas, which is based around the video game Fallout. We’ll take a few moments to learn a little about the out of character person before we go into the character.

So we will start off with some OOC stuff.

Kara: sounds good to me

Ok, so first off, how long have you been roleplaying?

Kara: Oh, geez. Hmmm. Probably close to 15 years now, I think.

How did you come up with Keifer Jefferies?

Kara: At the time, I knew of the series, I knew the basics of it, but not enough to where I could make a character worth playing there. So I had jokingly said I was going to use Nebula, from the movie, as a character, and then pieces started just slowly fitting into place. The character began taking shape as a bridge between the different games.

Well, that answers a bit of the second question I had – you weren’t a big fan of the games, to really fall into place?

Kara: It wasn’t even that, really. It’s funny, I actually own all the modern games. It’s just that I hadn’t really played them up to that point to feel confident enough to make a character in that world. So when I don’t feel comfortable making a character, I tend to go fringe.

Tell our readers a little about the world that Keifer is in before we switch to her for the rest of the interview.

Kara: It’s a post apocalyptic world, the result of a great war between all nuclear capable nations, but the main parties were the US, China, and the USSR. It’s set roughly 200 years after the war, and the world is still soaked in radiation fallout. We have to deal with mutated creatures, mutated humans, bandits, robots, and just the world in general. The remaining population is still trying to rebuild, trying to get back to some form of normalcy, but of course that’s hard with all that’s stacked against it.

Thank you for that, Kara. Now, if you don’t mind me asking, is Keifer ready for a little fun in this interview? -laughs-

Kara: I don’t think she is ever really ready!

-laughs- Okay, well, here we go!

Keifer, it’s great for you to take some time out of your day to do this for us. Tell me a bit about yourself?

Keifer: Hmm, well, that is a bit of an odd story, really. I was actually born before the war. I was a scientist who had been contracted to work at Big Mountain Research and Development Center – or as it’s referred to now, Big MT or the Big Empty.

Oh, really? Do you remember anything about the war, then? It would be interesting to tell our readers a bit about that, if we could.

Keifer: I do remember some of it. We had already been working for a little while at the time and weren’t really focused on what was going on. There had been tension for some time between the different countries, over typical things, but the war itself only lasted a matter of hours. That’s kind of when things shifted a bit in the Big MT as far as what was being worked on.

So the actual war only lasted a few hours? That’s interesting. So, what did you do after the war? How did you handle the changes?

Keifer: Well, after the war, the focus shifted to survival. We knew the nukes had dropped and there was mass hysteria, so we needed to find a way to survive the fallout. I was scared, obviously, because how could you not be when it comes to war on a global scale?

And how long as it been since the war? How long have you been in this new world?

Keifer: Ummm. I think it’s been about 208 years since the war, if my math is correct. I may be off by a year or 2. I myself have been in this new world maybe a year. It’s hard to keep track of days and months sometimes.

How is that possible? I thought you said you were born before the war.

Keifer: Well, that is where things get a little foggy, unfortunately.

Oh, so, you don’t remember? Does that mean you just woke up, then, from a sleep of some sort?

Keifer: Well, back when I said things shifted to be about survival, that meant experimentation. As we were locked down for the most part, you didn’t necessarily always have a choice. I remember being volunteered, and I remember flashes here and there. It’s like trying to repair a shattered mirror – there are splintered cracks all throughout, and that’s what it’s like for me. I get these splinters of a memory. I remember mostly being in cryo stasis between experiments, but for how long, I couldn’t tell you.

And now? Are you still in this experimentation station, or – ?

Keifer: No, thankfully, I am not. Through some involvement from someone or something, the entire station became exposed. I am not quite sure of the details. I do not even really recall how I escaped. I think there was probably a failure in the cryo pod and I thawed and found my way out. The first memory I really have is coming across the New Vegas strip.

New Vegas – that is what is left of Las Vegas in your time? So what year is it exactly?

Keifer: Yes, unfortunately, it’s pretty much all that’s left. It is still mostly functional as far as casinos and such go. It’s still at heart the same, it seems. As for the year, I have been told somewhere around 2285.

Wow, that’s a long time ahead of where we, the readers, are at. How are your days now? What’s a typical day for you?

Keifer: Well, that’s kind of hard to say, really. Most of my time, I spend just wandering from town to town. Most places are somewhat accommodating, but at there are also those who quite clearly aren’t because of how I look.

And how do you look, Keifer?

Keifer: Well, there is the blue skin, the bald head; there are the cybernetic implants, the all black eyes, and of course, my entire right arm was removed and replaced with a metal one. I am still curious what happened there myself.

Oh, so that creates a problem for you? Are there others like you in this new world?

Keifer: In a way there are, yes, but as far as I am aware, there is no other person close to being exactly like me out there.

Interesting. Well, it’s just about that time, so is there anything you would like our readers to know about you? Or your world?

Keifer: Well, I hate to use the cliché, “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” because that has been beaten to death, but we are mostly good people trying to recreate a good world for people to live in once again.

Thank you for your time! Hope to see you around sometime!

Featured Character: Miriam Jekyl

By Care

ReVolutionary Theory is the magazine that’s all about you – whether you’re a chatter, a player, or even a character! For this issue, Care digs into the den of Miriam Jekyl.

This quarter we are taking a look at the Supernatural side of things. I was able to sit down with Kuro, the typist and creator of Miriam Jekyl, who is a rather old wererat. If you don’t know the world of Laurell K. Hamilton or free forming it, then you are missing out, as LKH is one of the best Supernatural worlds out there. This character is played within the room THE CONDEMNED. I sat down with Kuro first, learned a little about the typist and finally sat down with the character herself, which I have to say was a rather interesting interview.

So let’s start off with something simple – how long have you been roleplaying?

Kuro: In total, it’s been a little over 15 years, but chat based has been roughly 13,

How long have you been role-playing the character?

Kuro: On and off for about 5 years.

Tell us a little bit about your inspiration when you were creating Miriam Jekyl?

Kuro: The original reason was that I needed a leader character that fit for London around the late 1800s. I always enjoyed the Rats in the books (and I’m a rat in the Chinese Zodiac), so it seemed a logical choice. From there it was just drawing on the movies/books that dealt with the era.

As the author of Miriam Jekyl, has there ever been a moment where the character surprised you so much that you went “What the fuck”?

Kuro: Not to that point, although it’s gotten close. She’s meant to be a no-nonsense defender of her Rodere, but there’s been a time where writing her ended up going in the route of helping someone who’s not a rat. No full WTF moments yet though.

What advice would you give to someone that is wanting to start a character within the world that Miriam lives in?

Kuro: Have fun and avoid strange people in dark alleyways. I’m horrible with advice. lol

Now we will take a moment and do the interview portion for the character herself. Yes, folks, characters are beings within our minds, and this is something that I have always found fascinating.

Hello, Miriam Jekyl. Thank you for agreeing to this interview today. Tell me a little about yourself?

Miriam: Very well. My name is Miriam. I was born several centuries ago in a well-off family. My father’s stupidity led my circumstances to become far less but did result in me becoming a Rat. As a Rat, I once ruled London from the underground. I was the Lady of the Night, Queen of the Rats, and I was willing to do anything to protect mine. I even made deals with the -shudders- undead. Nasty things, the undead; they smell foul and they drop bits everywhere. These days, I just deal with the circumstances that brought me to this damn island.

Can you tell us how old you are? If not, then about when you were born?

Miriam: To be truthful, I’m not sure how old I am exactly. I was roughly thirty when I was stuck in the vampire’s thrall. So that’s about a hundred and fifty. Easier to talk about when my childhood was. Electric light had just started being popular among the rich. I remember my father having it installed. Of course, I also remember the Jack the Ripper murders. I was around ten, maybe twelve, when all that happened.

Oh wow, you are very old then. Tell the readers a little bit about what you are, for someone that doesn’t know what being a “rat” means?

Miriam: What that means is that I’m awesome. In all seriousness, becoming a rat saved my life. I probably would have been another floater in the Thames if it was not for becoming one. What a Rat is, is that I’m a lycanthrope. Infected since I was a teen. I can change into the form of a rat but think closer to the size of an average dog, maybe a little bigger. I can pass on being a rat to others by passing bodily fluids – that’s if they survive the initial method of infection, that is.

Tell us a little about where you live now. I know you said you used to be in London, but what about now?

Miriam: Right now I live in The Underground, a dance club I managed to procure under questionable circumstances. It’s just one of many places on this blasted island. Not sure what this place is actually called, but blasted island works well. It’s like the island of misfit toys, except for things like me.

You live on some island somewhere? Isn’t that a little odd? Do you think you will ever get off this island to come back to the States or other normal countries?

Miriam: It is. I only came here cause of a blasted rumor. As of right now, it looks like I’m here for the long haul, but I’m hoping to one day get back to England. Hell, I’d just be satisfied to get to the mainland. But it’s like that song says, you can check out any time you want, but you can never ever leave.

So, you are saying you can’t ever leave that island? So you have nowhere to go, but around an island? Is it a big island?

Miriam: At the moment, I can’t. I’m not far enough up the asses of the right people. The government has taken to shooting down any unauthorized planes, even blowing up fishing boats with “suspicious” cargo. It’s a decent sized one. There’s a large city and some forest, some hills trying to pass themselves off as mountains. Still, it’s too small for the amount of things that are here.

There are other types of things on that island with you? Like besides other rats, as you said earlier?

Miriam: There are. I’ve been running into more and more every day. Seems people got it in their heads to send us all here. There’s rats, wolves, even some vampires roaming about. Luckily, they mostly leave me to myself.

That’s interesting, and yet no one knows where this island is located? So what about you, what do you hope to do while upon this island?

Miriam: I think they know, I just think they don’t care. Well, I came here because I thought there was a vampire here, but it seems that was just a rumor. Now I’m just trying to get enough money to bribe my way off this hunk of rock.

With the little you told us about yourself, lets dive into that a little bit more. Do you have any hopes or fears? Something that will get you through this time stuck on this island?

Miriam: Well hope is mostly for pansies. I do have the goal of getting revenge on the people who tricked me into coming here but that’s about it. Fears – yeah, I got a few. I’m honestly bat shit terrified of fire, almost died in large fires twice and zombies – god. Why do people find those things so damn fascinating? What’s gonna get me through time on this island is money. That and focusing on that revenge idea. Revenge is a hell of a thing to keep a person alive.

I think, that’s all the questions I had, is there anything you want to tell our readers?

Miriam: All I can say is, don’t send anyone you actually care about here. Even for a tourist visit. It’s all horse shit and they’ll probably get eaten.

Featured Character: Ryan O’Connell

By Joy Naomi

ReVolutionary Theory is the magazine that’s all about you – whether you’re a chatter, a player, or even a character! This month, Joy Naomi explores the mind behind Ryan O’Connell.

How did Ryan come into creation?

Well, it was odd. Ryan was created for another SoA room entirely. That one closed so when it came about that I needed another character for Anarchy Vegas, that is who I used. Worked on a backstory and there he is.

What are his dreams and goals in life?

He’s had a lot of dreams and goals. Some never made it past the planning stage in his life. He threw away an opportunity when he was very young to stay and become a member of the club. This was to honor the man that raised him, and he never told anyone about the opportunity back then. A couple others found out about it through roleplay. One goal accomplished was opening his own garage with Dominic. It was never his goal to become president of the MC – that was dropped in his lap and he puts all he is into trying to keep everyone safe (which is impossible and takes its toll on the character).

What is one of the scariest moments that you recall?

One of the scariest moments for Ryan as a character was a scene recently done while he was detoxing. He carries a heavy burden of the lifes lost and in his head always thinks in some way they come back on him: that he couldn’t keep people safe, that he somehow let them down, so the visits he got in these hallucinations, telling him in the most brutal ways of his failings for them, was probably the worst thing for the character. And because this is all happening in his head, no one else can see whats going on and no one can truly help him. The scariest thing for Ryan is to lose someone he cares about, so when all those moments collide it is pretty frightening for the character.

What is one of the funniest moments?

Again recently, on a road trip (and we all know how travel posts suck and we try to avoid them), but on a road trip hundreds of miles it can be pretty hilarious to see what happens to these guys during long times of just driving: getting punchy and basically getting on the nerves of fellow passengers, demanding pit stops, fun times to be had in that. Also breaking that fourth wall between the character and model can be fun at times, and we had a night where Mutt burst into Ryans office and yelled “Hey, guys! There’s walkers in the barn and Lori’s pregnant!”

What is one of the saddest moments?

There are a lot, but I think the one that still stands out (and is still at work in the background) is within the Dominic coma story line – and it’s a toss up on those, but I think the defining moment in that was the downward spiral Ryan took after the beat down and subsequent coma of his best friend. Ryan probably loves Dominic more than anyone would ever understand, so to see him fall like that and not come out of it, to be told that he has to make the decision rather to leave him on life support or take him off, it was a real struggle for the character, knowing his brother wouldn’t want to live like that on machines, but also not wanting to give up on him. There were a lot of flashbacks to an earlier, simpler time between these scenes, showing different periods of their relationship as they grew up together as well, so there was a build up that brought other people who had come in later, some not even having experienced the character of Dominic to become invested in what was happening and would he or wouldnt he make it through.

What three character traits would Ryan’s friends use to describe him?

Loyal. I have seen several say that Ryan has too much heart, so passionate, dependable.

List five words that describe him:

He’s loyal, brave, stubborn, reckless at times, and generous with the ones he cares about.

What has impacted him the most and how?

I think actually getting the club presidency and having to step up, to right wrongs that had happened, to take on this club without losing what he is to it has taken a lot for the character. He has taken the mantle and not only everything that is in it but everything he thinks should be in it as well.

What is his greatest fear?

Ryan’s greatest fear is losing the people he cares most about (which happens a lot).

What is his biggest regret and why?

Ryan’s biggest regret will always be not telling those closest to him how he feels about them, because a few times he has lost the opportunity to do so.

Do you think a leader should be liked or feared?

I think a bit of both. I mean you aren’t going to follow someone you can’t stand, but on the other hand there has to be that inkling of intimidation there, especially in the life he is in, so that no one thinks they can step up and take it from him without a fight.

Who are his heroes?

Bill. The man who raised him is a hero to him – a flawed one, but a hero none the less. He never knew Bill was his father until he was older, but the man always took care of him. Dominic was/is one of his heroes because when they were growing up Dom always helped him and stuck up for him, and Ryan’s always viewed him as the “strong” one. Also now that Dom is in a coma, Ryan’s view of his heroism has grown more idealized. Tank, because Tank has what Ryan can only dream of – a normal loving relationship outside and separate from the club, but still manages to do what needs to be done – and Random, because Random is fiercely loyal to the club, and to him, no matter what way it manifests itself in. Pretty much all the guys in the club have some presence about them or have something in them that he admires them for.

What does he do for fun?

Oh, there are a lot of things to do for fun in Vegas. Strip clubs, Chick N Tits (topless wing joint – really great garlic wings). Sometimes he just hangs with the guys at the club house playing poker and drinking beer and smoking whatever is available. There are occasional trips to the Den of Sin out in the desert, and now and then he just spends time at his family’s cabin outside Vegas to relax. Oh, and the fight club. He has fun at the fight club, but we can’t talk about it.

If he was an animal what would he be and why?

A wolf, I think, because sometimes he has the need to do things on his own, but his pack is always there to back him up when he needs it. In roleplay once he was told “You’re not a lone wolf anymore. We have your back,” which he carries with him and tries to remember.

Is Ryan a nice person?

No. He can be nice, but everything he is is about the club and those close to him, and any threat to that is something he would kill over. He’s not in this world to make friends outside of his lifestyle. If he does that’s great, but he doesn’t have time for people that dont get that his first interest is the club and those in it.

Is he competitive?

Of course he’s competitive. He’s in a club with a bunch of dick swinging bikers!

What are his pet peeve?

Weak and stupid people really get on his nerves. Also those that perceive themselves to be above any others. And mouthy chicks.

What kind of goals (if any) do you have for the character?

Ryan’s goal is always to have the club in a good place where people in the club can be kept safe. Sometimes he longs for a “normal” life, but he knows that will never happen. Not with what he is and the life that he has chosen.

Is he ever hard to write?

Sure. I think every character has that time when they are hard to write. Ryan is very complex, so sometimes there are days when I’m just not feeling him because there is the buried poetic aspect about him that is sometimes hard to reach. Many times in the roleplays I do with Ryan, other literature is vaguely referenced and is a slight theme throughout the play so that can be hard to carry through as well.

Have you ever written something then wondered “wtf”?

All the time, and I hope I get that reaction from others as well. It is always shocking to people when Ryan hits a woman (it’s happened twice – out of all the times everyone says that bitch needs smacked, he’s done it twice, so it’s not his go to), but generally when I get myself immersed in Ryan’s head space, anything can happen and I have looked back on roleplays and went, “Well, shit, I never would have done that.” I mean you just don’t whip it out and piss on someone’s face, right? Not without asking first.

If you the writer were ever to meet the character what do you think that would be like?

I think it would be ok. I mean I’m a pretty laid back guy and would likely get along with most of my characters. I think if I ever met Ryan I would probably buy pot from him or something, but it wouldn’t be a long term friendship. I would ask him where he got his tattoos done.

What other things would you like us to know about him?

Ryan is one of my most real and complicated characters. His background has been built through roleplay and there are many dimensions to him, not just the surface biker bad ass guy. He does have a kind heart that manifests itself sometimes in roleplay, but he will never put it off as a kindness and buffer such with a quip or slight insult, because he thinks it is a weakness to show that side of himself.

What made you decide to try online roleplaying?

A friend I was gaming with several years back suggested it. I tried it and was hooked.

How long have you been roleplaying?

I have been roleplaying online for 7 years in May.

What are your favorite and least favorite genres?

My favorite genre has always been medieval fantasy, though I have had a hard time playing it lately. Just the imagery you can get like no other. As a typist it’s a challenge to convey that in text, what is taking up room in your head. I won’t say my least favorite as I have pretty much tried everything and some just ring more true and are easier for me to get into than others.

What advice would you give to someone new to online role-play?

I would tell them to be friendly. To observe and to ask questions of the people leading the room or the ones that have been there long term. Most people are friendly and will help you as much as they can. Get an idea of playing in and may even offer to be a counterpart. Also research. Know at least a bit of something about the genre you are going into.
